Wikia toolset: il software open source per creare social network di nicchia

Wikia, la comunità di wiki (commerciali) indipendente, fondata da Jimmy Wales e Angela Beesley, ha rilasciato dei nuovi componenti  per il social networking sotto la licenza GNU General Public License 2.0. Grazie a questi strumenti chiunque sia in grado di installare un Mediawiki su di un server potrà creare un social network opensource. Ci sono già due grandi community online che usano gli strumenti di social networking di Wikia: la community sportiva ArmchairGM e la neonata Halopedia.

Il codice sorgente rilasciato di recente (la Social Profile extension di Mediawiki)  permette di creare i profili, caricare gli avatar, aggiungere gli amici o bloccare i “nemici”, la possibilità di lasciare dei messaggi nelle pagine degli altri utenti come accade con il Wall su Facebook o di inviare i messaggi a dei gruppi di amici.

Gli strumenti di Wikia permettono di unire le caratteristiche del wiki con quelle dei social network: oltre a realizzare un sito facile da modificare da parte di chiunque, si potranno creare più punti di contatto con gli utenti del sito che potranno contribuire alla produzione dei contenuti del sito.

Il rilascio di questo codice sorgente, secondo Marshall Kirkpatrick, potrà avere delle conseguenze anche sull’organizzazione degli altri siti di social news o di social networking, perché grazie a questi strumenti gli utenti potranno costruirsi facilmente delle community di nicchia, nelle quali discutere e segnalare le notizie che preferiscono, senza dover ricorrere ai grandi social news aggregator, quali ad esempio Digg o Reddit.
